Overview

MetaCanvas is a toolkit for prototyping tessellation-based shape-changing structures. It replaces repeated assembly and fabrication with a cut-and-configure workflow: users customize a pre-instrumented active canvas and keep adjusting its motion after fabrication.

How it works

  1. Users define an outline and motion regions in a design and simulation interface, preview approximate transformations, and export a cut outline and circuit schematic.
  2. A reusable tessellation canvas contains triangular unit cells with shape-memory-alloy actuators and conductive pathways. Users cut the sheet and configure the active regions.
  3. A portable Motion Setup Case adjusts motion order, speed, duration, repetition, and intervals directly on the fabricated artifact.

Evaluation & findings

The paper combines technical characterization, five demonstration artifacts, and a design study with 12 participants. The results show support for localized motion design, form customization, and continued motion exploration after fabrication. Some local cutting mistakes could be repaired or reinterpreted without rebuilding the whole artifact.

Takeaway

Reusable active substrates can make shape-changing prototyping an iterative process that continues after a physical artifact has been made.
